Vancouver CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and stop back pain. (6) Vancouver Disc Centers and you can talk about how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Vancouver chiropractic visit to Vancouver Disc Centers.
