Vancouver Disc Centers Offers Chiropractic Care Which May Reduce the Need of Opioids

April 27, 2021

Opioid epidemic. The news talks about it. An efficient way to avoid relying on opioids is to not have to start with them. The public and the medical community are (coming) together about this topic. Recent research describes the benefit chiropractic care has in reducing the need, prescribing, and use of opioids. Vancouver Disc Centers is glad to fill the additional role of pain management for Vancouver back pain sufferers!

CHIROPRACTIC BACK PAIN PATIENTS AND THEIR USE OF OPIOIDS

Vancouver Disc Centers knows the frequent opioid use in low back pain management. Researchers do, also. They analyzed low back pain patients cared for by chiropractors to see if said chiropractic patients were less prone to use or more likely to use lower doses of opioids for their pain. Such an impact could lead to a reduced risk of adverse effects. They saw that chiropractic patients versus non-chiropractic patients were 55% less prone to fill an opioid prescription, a significantly lower number. (1) There are many Vancouver chiropractic patients who would like to not fill their opioid prescriptions. Vancouver Disc Centers is here to help them control their back pain with the addition of Vancouver chiropractic care.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN A MEDICAL SETTING: THE POSITIVE IMPACT

Vancouver Disc Centers often cooperates with medical colleagues to be of assistance to our Vancouver back pain patients in managing their pain. Research endorses such an effort! The study of a family medicine practice that integrated chiropractic services found changes in opioid prescription rates. The monthly rate of opioid prescription writing dropped significantly by 22%. The rate of prescription writing for schedule II opioids decreased significantly by 32% as well. The likelihood of writing a schedule II opioid prescription dropped by 27%, too, when chiropractic services were added. Medical providers prescribed daily doses of opioids that were 30% less than before chiropractic was added. Including chiropractic decreased the dosage of opioids, the number of opioid prescriptions, and the types of opioids prescribed. The authors proposed that including chiropractic was beneficial in opioid prescribing and implementation of a non-pharmaceutical alternative for pain management.
